The document considered the most used by Brazilian citizens, the so-called General Registry, also known as the Identity Card, whose main function is to identify each existing resident of the country, can now be accessed digitally.

In Brazil, numerous problems of fraud, embezzlement and several others arise due to the fact that it is possible to register in each of the 27 Federation Units. This was one of the reasons that led the federal government to adopt this measure, which aims to digitize citizens' data.

In addition to avoiding possible crimes of ideological forgery, the digital RG, already adhered to in some states, also aims to facilitate bureaucratic processes faced by citizens when issuing a new document, either due to loss or expiration.

The idea is to unify all documents in a single wallet to facilitate use and bring more security to those who carry them. In this way, the use of paper documents will become obsolete, bringing more security and practicality.

It was through Decree No. 10,977/2022, that the new identity card was validated, but it came into force in only a few Brazilian states.

RG Digital is not the new RG It is worth mentioning that the digital RG is an adaptation to the new National Identity Card (CNI), a physical document that will replace the current one. The new version of the General Registration document is being made available to part of the population this year and will be mandatory for the year 2032.

To obtain the scanned document, it will be necessary to have the updated physical, that is, issue the new National Identity Card, which will be available in all states for March 2023.

The Ministry of Economy has already released the deadlines for requesting the new RG for those who have the old model of the document. Are they:

Children from 0 to 12 years: Document valid up to 5 years. Persons aged 12 to 60: Document valid for up to 10 years. Seniors over 60 years old: Indefinite period for using the old RG. How will the new digital identity card work? The main difference between the physical and digital document will be its numbering. What used to be a number present in the Identity Registry itself, will be exchanged for the Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF).

This factor is what will fight ideological falsehood in the country. The citizen who issued the first copy of the RG in Rio de Janeiro and requested the second copy in São Paulo, will not have two different RG numbers, which was previously possible, considering that whoever wanted to request a new copy in each state, could have a total of 27 different ID numbers.

Old identity card and new identity cardNow, when an identity card is issued in a state other than the one where the first one was issued, it will be considered a duplicate.

In addition to these, the changes in the new document do not stop there, they will also include: Access through the Gov.br website, the option to be checked offline through the QR code, replace the passport in some Mercosur countries, include information on health in the document at the time of issuance such as blood group, and other information about particular health cases.

How to issue the digital CNI by cell phone? When looking for the application, be careful, because you can fill in your data in some fraudulent application. Its official version is available for only a few Brazilian states, namely:

Download the app in your state's version available free of charge for Android and iOS devices. Open the application and click on the “Add Digital RG” button. Point your cell phone camera and scan the QR code available on the back of the physical version of the document. Select the “Read QR Code” option and grant permission for the app to take photos. Accept the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy in the option “I have read and agree with the terms”. Press the “Start recognition” button to perform facial recognition. Create a 4-digit password to access the digital document. Re-enter the password for confirmation. You will also have the option to enable the fingerprint access option available on your device. Wait for confirmation of the issuance of the virtual RG and then click on “View RG”. Do not waste time. The new RG, in addition to simplifying citizens' lives by providing all their information unified in a single document, will also reduce possible fraud due to its security generated by electronic validation.
